The other day I posted some activity ideas for Bear in a Square. Of course, I couldn’t leave you hanging and not show you the shape art that we did!
I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how my 2 year old would respond to this craft, but he loved it and did very well.
He had fun with all the shapes as I was cutting them out. He lined up all the triangles next to each other and we discussed color and shapes. Unfortunately, for me, he did decide he was done at one point and balled up all the shapes and told me they were trash. I guess I can’t complain about him cleaning up but I did have to cut out more shapes after that!
I decided I was going to make a teddy bear out of circles since I mentioned that as an idea in the Bear in a Square activity post. I asked X what he wanted to make and he immediately said “TRACTOR!” So I cut out shapes for both of our designs and then a bunch more for free-form abstract play.

Next it was glue time! This was the X-man’s first time using glue and he was very enthusiastic about it! Though, I’m not sure if he enjoyed repeatedly taking the lid on and off or the actual gluing more. And yes, I did jump in and help him.

After gluing all the pieces of the bear this is what we had:
Finally, I added some quick details with a marker. Our finished “bear in a square” is made of 11 circles and is sitting on a square background. You could save yourself some cutting by drawing the eyes and nose on instead. My little guy specifically asked for eyes and a nose and I was happy to honor his request. You could also center your bear and skip the hat – I only added it since I mentioned making a top hat in my previous post.
Next up was the tractor. This one is a little more complicated since there are more pieces and colors. I was inspired by one of X’s favorite books, Driving My Tractor, and added a trailer with a pig. Plus, I couldn’t stop myself from making a sun out of a circle and triangles!

So there you have it, our children’s craft activity that can be used with Bear in a Square OR Driving My Tractor.
A sun alone would also be a fun and simple craft project for little ones. I’m envisioning fluffy cotton balls clouds and talks about the weather and seasons. Oh, and did you notice how the 6 triangles form a hexagon around the circle?
