For this giveaway carnival I have a soon-to-be released trippy book about animals that experience a sudden eclipse of the sun.

Concerned that the sun had lost its way, Ned the horse, Peter the rabbit, Bert the bumblebee and Molly mouse form an expedition to find the source of the light. Their journey takes them through the forest of fear, and beyond to a land where nothing seems right. They receive guidance from several wise characters, including a firefly with his own inner light. Eventually they find what they are looking for and discover that everything they are seeking outside of themselves already exists within each one of them.

If you like rhyming stories, you’ll want to check this one out. It’s one the longest rhyming picture books I’ve read. To give you an idea, it’s somewhere around 1500 words and most picture books published today are closer to 500. So I have to give the author credit for keeping it going for so long! Amazing.

Though, personally, for me, the rhyming is a bit of a distraction and I wonder if the story could have been better expressed in prose. For example, at one point the animals reach a fork in the road (the easy way or the hard way) and eventually decide to forge their own path. To me, it seemed the author was saying that you don’t always have to take the paths laid out for you to reach your intended goals. You can, and maybe should forge your own destiny.  A noble message, indeed! And one that I hope isn’t missed at first because of the constraints of writing in rhythm and rhyme.

But no matter, I hope you will enjoy the chance to win this bright and cheerfully illustrated picture book. It should also be available in bookstores nationwide in a few weeks so you can check it out in person yourself!
