Meet Isabel. She is one determined little porcupine faced with one big dilemma: find a way to “pop-proof” herself and her fellow porcupine classmates or face a major disappointment at their graduation. She only has two days to think of something or they will have to settle for bookmarks, once again, instead of the fun balloons that everyone else will be getting. The porcupines have always only dreamed of having a balloon.
The problem? When their quills pop a balloon, as they inevitably will do, the popped balloon could fly across the room and hit someone in the eye! So Isabel passionately argues her case with her teacher, moving from Plan A, to Plan B, then Plan C, and finally, Plan D. None of her ideas convince their teacher to allow them to have balloons.
Isabel is running out of time, and she begins to worry that the porcupines may have to settle for bookmarks after all. Until… she gets a brilliant idea while eating at a cookout at her friend’s home. His daddy owns a candy shop, and as he and Isabel are talking about their predicament, the gumdrops in the candy dish sitting before her sparks her final plan. Will it work? This is her last shot because tomorrow is Graduation Day!
A Balloon for Isabel, by Deborah Underwood, is a delightful story that both children and adults alike will thoroughly enjoy. Not only is it a wonderful story with cute illustrations, but it teaches the important life lesson of persevering through a problem until you find a solution, through balloons and candy… two of children’s most favorite things!
